Given the Microsoft design challenge of helping people affected by disasters, we were requested to build a system that potentially ought to be integrated into all technology devices. An annotated PowerPoint deck which included research insights, problem and assumptions, final design and its rationale was submitted in the end. My job in this project was mainly Hi-Fi prototyping and visual design.
Our team picked an unique angle to approach to this challenge. We decided to focus on helping people deal with insurance issues after disasters, especially their lose of possessions. From our primary research with a victim of a fire who lost her apartment and possessions, we confirmed our predispositions that people have difficulty remembering all of the material possessions and filing an insurance claim is a long and even overwhelming process. However, inspired by our secondary research, we became aware of that social networks capture massive amounts of image data which may contains pictures of one's possessions and can be used as documented evidence that helps victims rebuilt their household inventory. We conducted three rounds of usability testing and iteration to improve our design to achieve our goals of helping people build an inventory of possessions, streamlining insurance claim process and regenerating their material life after a disaster. This is why we named our app Regenventory.
